Metals

There are a range of metals used by Fuel Your Craft as well as but our suppliers. This section focuses on jewellery materials. Precious metals sold via this website such as Sterling Silver, Fine Silver and various colours and carats of gold are offered as supplies which are intended for further manufacturing. Supplies such as this are classed as bullion products intended for manufacture and are therefore exempt form hallmarking. All precious metals on this site comply with the EU nickel directive.

Base Metal products, specifically Tierra Cast jewellery components, are cast in Pewter (composed of 92% tin, 7.5 % antimony and .5% copper) and then plated with various finishes.  Tin is refined from ore that contains other metals, including lead. A chemical process is used to remove the lead, but trace amounts still remain. Although all pewter contains trace amounts of lead, the term "lead free pewter" is used to describe pewter that meets the stringent FDA standard of less than .05% (or 500 parts per million) lead content in pewter in contact with food.

EU Nickel Compliance:

Tierra Cast Pewter regularly tests below 100 ppm lead and less than 50ppm for cadmium and does not contain nickel.

Unplated pewter finish components numbers -10 and -40, our in house black finish -13, and our plated -27 Brass Ox finish are nickel-free.

A flash layer of nickel is used in the plating process for our Silver, Gold, Copper and Rhodium plated finishes. Historically, these finishes, with the exception of Rhodium (-60 & -61), have passed the “wear test” requirements for compliance with EN 1811.

Update: Recent periodic testing has provided inconsistent results for Tierra Cast Silver, Gold and Copper plated finishes.  They are working with their plating company to correct the issue, however, in the meantime they cannot assert that those plated products comply with the European Nickel Directive.
